ACADEMIC BACKGROUND:

  • PhD or MS in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or a related discipline

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum requirements:

  • A minimum of 5-10 years of industrial experience in lithium polymer primary or secondary batteries.
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with development and use of battery life models.
  • Successful management of technical development projects.
  • Must intimately understand current technology component of product.
  • Proficient in MS Office.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

General:

  • The Director Battery R&D/Senior Electrochemist will be responsible for the company’s product design/development and standard qualification testing of all manufactured batteries. The ideal candidate will have successfully designed various battery configurations from initial prototype builds through commercial volumes. The candidate must be highly motivated, detail-oriented, and hands-on with extensive knowledge in designing lithium primary batteries.

Specific:

  • Management of technical project planning and timing (work plan).
  • Hiring, managing, developing and coaching staff to ensure that staff members perform to expectations and fulfill all the responsibilities set forth in their responsibilities statements.
  • Characterization and analysis of material properties, such as, mechanical, morphological and electro chemical characteristics.
  • Research, identification and implementation of advanced materials and techniques related to electrode processing, at least on a pilot scale.
  • Interpret and communicate material properties and characteristics as they relate to electrode manufacturing processes to Process Engineering staff.
  • Leads projects including replacement and qualification of suppliers, development of new analytical techniques, development of design of experiment plans with Process Engineering, manufacture of unique powder formulations at bench to production scale, coordinating development battery building and testing.
  • Present papers and reports to symposiums, conferences and other technical meetings related to chemical power technology.
  • Development of cell design and process failure modes and effects analysis (FMEA).
  • Identification of critical design characteristics.
  • Maintenance of project planning, data, and reporting.
  • Develop cell design specifications and design validation methods and plans.
  • Employ design-of-experiments (DOE) to isolate and quantify cell degradation mechanisms.
  • Support the definition and documentation of cell failure mechanisms, transfer function, and key failure stress factors.
  • Detailed analysis of cell design, including, Electrode, Electrochemistry composition and selection, Electrode and cell fabrication processing.
  • Interacting with the Sales & Marketing, Manufacturing Operations, Product Development and other interfaces in formulating the technology vision.
  • Providing support and feedback into the product planning process to ensure the most profitable products are developed.
  • Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned at any time and from time to time.
