ACADEMIC BACKGROUND:
- MS, PhD (desired); Mechanical Engineering
EXPERIENCE:
Required
- 3+ years industrial experience.
- Ability to analyze and design complex products.
- Structural analysis and design experience:
- Machine design
- Hand calculations such as Roark’s formulae for stress and strain
- Paper to product experience with the ability to read and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Strong software skills with proficiency in solid modeling packages such as IDEAS and commercial finite element codes such as ANSYS.
- Flexibility in handling challenging, multi-tasking workloads.
- Ability to work with cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams on large programs.
- Ability to lead, plan and execute small design, design change, cost reduction or problem resolution projects.
Desired
- 5+ years experience in superconducting magnet and/or gradient coil design or other high tech industry such as aircraft, optics, satellite, with close coupling to a manufacturing team.
- Experience in numerical analysis tools and optimization methods.
- Leadership, teamwork, and interpersonal skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Capability to generate innovative concepts.
- Six Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification.
- Ability to perform:
- Thermal analysis and design
- Radiation and conduction heat transfer using temperature dependent properties
- Forced convection cooling analysis
- Finite element and closed form solution analysis
- Experience with modal analysis, testing and modal test SW (eg. Star Modal).
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
General:
- Join the magnet/gradient engineering team.
- Participate in all phases of the product development life cycle, from concept and product specification generation to manufacturing ramp up, optimizing functionality, manufacturingability, reliability, serviceability and cost.
- Be involved in both new product design and support of existing products with manufacturing, sourcing and service.
- Participate in product safety, cost out, cycle time reduction and quality enhancement projects.
- Support and comply with the quality and safety goals of the company.
- Define superconducting magnet concepts, functional requirements and program goals.
- Provide support and direction in the design and analysis of advanced products.
Specific:
- Mechanical design and analysis of superconducting magnets, gradient coils and components used in MRI systems.
- Component structural design and analysis at cryogenic and room temperature.
- Modal and forced response analysis and hands on verification testing.
- Design and implementation of verification activities using accelleraometers, strain gages, spectrum analyzers.
- Support member fatigue evaluation (analytical and experimental).
- Pressure vessel design and analysis.
- Thermal stress analysis using temperature dependent properties.
- Non-linear structural analysis.
- Design and analysis composite components (eg. Fiber reinforced plastic, epoxies, carbon & glass fiber).
- Preparation/presentation of design analysis reports and part/assembly drawing reviews.
- Participate and lead prototype build activities to ensure compliance with design intent.
- Develop product, component test and purchase specifications.
- Design leadership of productivity projects (both product cost and life cycle cost reduction).
- Coordinate cross-functional design, analysis and testing.
- Support & lead manufacturing lean initiatives.
- Provide creative solutions to unstructured product and system design issues from both factory and field.
- Support compliance related activities (eg. Audits) and follow the Quality Management System.
